1. Compare your initial perceptions of Sal and Phoebe to what you know up to now. How similar or different are they? Which predictions are no longer valid? Why?
2. Are Sal and Phoebe guilty of pre-judging others? Who? Why or how have they been pre-judged by the girls?
Compare and Contrast Families (Objectives A & B)
- At the beginning of chapter 9 Phoebe says, "Mary Lou's family is not nearly as civilized as ours."
- Draw a Venn Diagram. Label one circle "The Finney's" and the other circle "The Winterbottoms'"
- Scan the chapter for details about the Finney's home life and behavior and write that information in the Venn diagram.
- Re-read chapter 6 and find details about the Winterbottoms' home life and behavior. Write that information in the Venn diagram.
- Use the Venn diagram to characterize both families by making inferences about the things that are important to them.
- On page 48, Sal has a theory about why Phoebe says that the Finney's behavior is "embarrassing". Explain her theory. Do you think she has a good point? Why or why not?
